With an emotional UVI navigating their last few weeks in school EVER, a lowly LVI edging ever closer to the realm of Higher Ed, and teary Yr 11s dragging themselves slowly toward the end of their GCSEs…it’s safe to say the Summer Term is always a period of change and transition - whether eagerly-anticipated or much-dreaded. Trips down memory lane, reminiscing about carefree, younger days becomes a quotidian activity for much of the school during this tumultuous time period. In this way, Unpublished is desirous of playing an additive role in this scholastic wave of nostalgia and proudly presents the following Top Four Childhood Throwbacks! (TW: these will definitely make you feel super old...)
Magic Fairy Books

If you didn’t read this seemingly endless series with a worryingly insatiable hunger, did you even have a childhood? Bonus points for the catchy alliteration…however, perhaps this is slightly balanced out by the seemingly strained attempts at creativity - personally, I question the relevance of Sonaya the Skiing Fairy and Riley the Skateboarding Fairy, but clearly the extent to which the imagination of a Rainbow Magic writer stretches is not to be underestimated. From the evolution of staple books like Ruby the Red Fairy to the more experimental stories of Seren the Sausage Dog Fairy, my childhood would definitely not have been the same without these bedtime books
Heelys Shoes

I think I speak for all of us when I say these shoes were definitely the coolest thing any Yr 6 could wear. Just the sight of a colourfully-clothed 10-year-old gliding through the school corridors was enough to induce unbearable waves of envy. Heelys are truly a win-win. Efficient mode of transportation? Check. Fun, bright colours? Check. A boost up that illustrious primary school social ladder? Big check. In summary: Heelys were the icon of our childhoods. #Bringthemback…(and replace the Stanley cups with them)...
The Rainbow Parachute Every Primary School Somehow Had

Not exactly sure as to why every single primary school located within the UK was equipped with this absolute legend of a parachute, but it doesn’t matter. When this bad boy comes out, all thoughts but one are instantly ejected: get to that rainbow paradise no matter what. Home to many infamous amusements from the suspenseful thrills of Cat and Mouse and Duck, Duck, Goose, to classic games like It, the Rainbow Parachute was with us through it all. Honestly, I think the moment I knew I was no longer a child was when this icon no longer made an everyday appearance. Heartbreaking though it is, the evolution from Rainbow Parachute to studying is a fate no one can avoid, but this doesn’t (and shouldn’t) prevent lingering, wistful thoughts of the kaleidoscopic haven. Another trend to #bringbacknow. I have no doubt it would make a significant improvement to both the mood and engagement of Godolphin students when in their PE Lessons. Ms Elfick take notes.
Friv

In the spirit of saving the best till last - I without a doubt speak for all when I say Friv is the ULTIMATE childhood throwback. Essentially a digital heaven to 8-9 year-olds across the globe, the sheer choice of games Friv offered sent the young user into a hyper trance of ecstasy. Hours driven away by achieving every single level of all five temple versions of Fireboy and Watergirl (real ones know that no Elements or Crystal Temple can ever beat the OG Forest Temple) became inevitably varied once new discoveries were made: from Papa’s Pizzeria, Red Ball, Stick Man and MANY more, Friv was there when we needed it most. It never let us down. And even when the Friv vs Coolmathgames rivalry became tense, nothing could take away from the glory and glow that characterised this undeniably iconic platform. Live, laugh, love Friv.
Tying off another article with my completely unbiased reporting skills, I hope this short and sweet collection offered a quick trip down memory lane during an infamously nostalgic period of Godolphin school life. In the words of an inspirational ex-teacher, “Don’t cry because it's over, smile because it happened.” Truly, Godolphin is just the gift that keeps on giving. Now - back to studying and exams!
